WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Solving the plastic problem is not as easy as swapping a plastic bag for a fabric one or replacing cling film with a wax wrap. As citizens we need to rethink around how we consume, what we consume, how we recycle and what we can use as alternatives to plastic. No action is too little. Working together we can achieve change and make a difference.

Think about how you can routinely help protect your local coastline – like picking up rubbish on the streets before it makes it way into the drainage systems and is washed into our seas.

Refuse single use plastic items, like those found in Happy Meals or these cheap items bought from the big stores that easily break within days of purchasing them.
Local actions – search out local groups who are already working together to make a difference with dune planting, and regular beach clean-ups.

Microplastics are found in three of every four of New Zealand’s fish, huge portions of indigenous seabirds and marine species are threatened with extinction, and warmer oceans are becoming uninhabitable to native species Microplastics are plastic pieces that measure less than five millimetres across. Some microplastics have formed by breaking away from larger plastics that have fragmented over time, like plastic bags/containers floating in the ocean or materials from clothing. Others have been made small intentionally, for example cosmetic microbeads used in facial scrubs. It pays to stop and think before you consume as to how or if your item can be reused or recycled.
